Campervan 230V Electrics Install (with Victron Phoenix Inverter!) | Transit Van Conversion E46
In this video we're installing our Victron Phoenix 1200VA Inverter and 230V sockets in our campervan!
We have three 230V sockets in the van that we want to hardwire into an inverter, and we also want a consumer unit with an RCD and MCB to give us some safety.
We compared the Victron 1000W inverter with a Renogy inverter and decided to go with the Victron as it was better suited for the earthing required for an RCD to function.
There are lots of choices when it comes to campervan inverters, consumer units, RCDs and MCBs so there was a lot to consider. The actual wiring of the inverter and all the sockets was fairly straightforward after that. We also wired in the remaining 12V sockets we have...

Off-grid Internet & WiFi in a Campervan (Easy 4G Setup!) | Transit Van Conversion E45
Просмотров 39 тыс.5 месяцев назад
We want to have off-grid Internet and WiFi in our campervan so that's what we'll be setting up in this video! We're using the Teltonika RUTX11 4G router and pairing it with an external antenna on the roof, the Poynting Mimo 3. The available mobile 4G signal in rural locations can be quite limited, so adding the Poynting external annenna should give us a much better chance of picking up a signal...
Simploo Mini Composting Toilet in a Campervan (Install and first test!) | Transit Van Conversion E44
Просмотров 21 тыс.6 месяцев назад
We needed a toilet in our van and decided to go with the Simploo Mini, which is a waterless composting toilet. We're installing the simploo into our shower room and it is a nice simple project for once! We wanted a urine separating compost toilet instead of a chemical toilet so it is simpler and we don't have to deal with any chemicals. All we need to do is setup the 12V fan, sort out the pee a...
Comfy Campervan Bench Seats (with storage!) | Transit Van Conversion E43

In this video we're finally making our campervan bench seats! We wanted to build our bench seats with lots of storage space and comfy cushions as we're going to be sitting on them a lot! We originally intended to have a wrap-around bench seat but decided instead to make two seats facing each other. We used a mix of firm foam for the base and slightly softer for the backs. Underslung Grey Water Tank & Plumbing (With Level Sensors!) | Transit Van Conversion E42
Просмотров 21 тыс.7 месяцев назад
In this video we're mounting an underslung grey water tank to our van, and doing all of the waste water plumbing. We went with a 45l grey water tank, to go with the 85l fresh water tank we already have installed. And we're all installing two KUS water level gauges to monitor the water level in the tanks with float sensors. Handy! We need to do our van waste plumbing to take the grey water from ...
Campervan Overhead Cabinets (with bookshelf!) - Part 2 | Transit Van Conversion E41

This is part two of our campervan overhead cabinet build, and this time we need to make the doors for them, and then we can put it all together and get it bolted onto the wall! We made our van cabinets with enough storage for our clothes and toiletries, and with a shelf between them for some books and things. Check out the previous video if you want to see the build for that part. Thanks for wa...
Campervan Overhead Cabinets (Spacious & lightweight!) - Part 1 | Transit Van Conversion E40

We're making our campervan overhead cabinets to give us some essential storage space for our clothes, with a built-in bookshelf too! We wanted our van cabinets to be roomy but lightweight so we built them using thin birch plywood and pine strips. It's another very DIY project to scribe everything to the curves of the van, but we're happy with the result! Now they just need some doors... next ti...
Roldour Sliding Shower Door Install (Compact & Self-Cleaning!) | Transit Van Conversion E39

We needed a sliding shower door for our campervan conversion, and decided to go with the Roldour from @THEdour-Bespoke as it's space-saving, self-cleaning and can be ordered to size. We looked at other shower door options like the Nautilus, but it was hard to get in the UK for a good price. We also considered a simple shower curtain or DIY swinging door but we thought this would be the best opt...
Fast & Cheap Hot Water in our Campervan! - Part 2 (with Bobil Vans Kit) | Transit Van Conversion E38
Просмотров 42 тыс.11 месяцев назад
This time we're plumbing in our campervan hot water system using the Bobil Vans heat exchanger kit, so we have fast (and cheap!) hot water for our shower! With this kit we can heat our water using the hot air from our Chinese diesel heater, or from solar using any excess charge once our batteries are topped up. Or just from driving down the road too! In part 1 we setup the Bobil Air Xchange for...

This time we're working on our vans hot water system which will heat the water in our tank using the air from our diesel heater and the Bobil Vans heat exchanger kit! We needed a van hot water system that would work well with the recirculating shower that we're building, so the DIY kit from Bobil Vans (@bobilvans4205) looked great. It uses a heat exchanger and diverter that fits inline in our d...
Campervan Cold Water System (We Have Running Water!) | Transit Van Conversion E36

We've been looking forward to this project for a while as we're going to be installing the cold water system in our campervan so that we have running water! In this video we're finally getting round to our Victron Orion DC to DC Charger Install. Up until now we've only been able to charge our lithium batteries using solar, but after installing our DC-DC/B2B charger we'll be able to also charge up via our alternator as well just from driving the van down the road! We went for the Victron Orion 12/12-30 Smart Isolated DC-DC charger. It's a nice simpl...

    Have you consider / thought about a "rain water collection" so that fresh water is not such a limiting factor and there can always be a off-valve in the collection once it reaches a certain level, but then if there's rain, you have fresh water. You just need water filters and uv lights to clean the rain water for consumption. Just a suggestion. :)

      Yep we treated every bit of wood in the van except for the seat slats and bed slats (as we didn't want anything leeching onto the fabric). That was with varnish, paint or oil depending on what it was and how visible it was, as we wanted to reduce warping but also the chance of it developing any mould 👍

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories 16 дней назад

      Hey, we decided not to put in a vapour barrier at all actually. We're of the opinion that condensation and moisture is inevitable when you're living/breathing/cooking in a van so instead went with hydrophobic insulation materials and the approach of letting the van breath and adapt to the different climates and stress we put it through. We left some areas where we can get to the insulation behind the wall to inspect it and after a couple of years now we've had no issues 👍

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories 16 дней назад

      Cheers :) And because of the curvy nature of the Transit in some of the places with the thick 50mm rigit board pressed into the cavities the 90mm ones weren't really long enough to reach from the van metal and actually poke out enough to be secured. Knowing that we'd have probably just got the long ones for everywhere, as you can easily bend them down/cut them if too long but can't use them if they're too short 👍

      The alternator output changes depending on the demand, ours can output up to 150A so can easily cope with a 30A charger. We're probably going to upgrade at some point to the newer 50A one which would be nice as we'd be able to recharge a lot quicker 👍

    Hey sorry but can you advise me on something. What size are those panels? Online says 126 x 70 but when you got them width together for 140 it looks basically the same width as the length? So the two together should be 1400mm but along side the 126 length it looks so close

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories 20 дней назад

      These are the ones we have: uk.renogy.com/175-watt-monocrystalline-solar-panel/ , we haven't measured them but presume the specs are correct. Yeah the two width ways ones side by side would be around 140cm of panel but don't forget there's brackets at each side as well which take up a bit of space. The two width ways ones end up sticking out a bit more than the third length ways one in our setup, you can sort of see it at 20:38 👍

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories 20 дней назад

      We have 200Ah in total (2x 100), and 525W of solar to charge them. Whether that's enough for you really depends on your climate and how much power you need. Having more solar would obviously be nice if you can physically fit it on the roof. Our setup works pretty great for us as when it's actually sunny we're always topped up. In Winter or when there's no sun we can't rely on the solar at all obviously, so for that we have the DC charger which also works well for us as we drive a lot, but YMMV 👍

    Hi thanks for the video! Isn't 6mm cable a bit of an overstretch for a 12V fridge? For a 5A draw and 4-5m circuit I don't see the need for anything below 14AWG.

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories 16 дней назад

      Hey, no problem 🙂 And we wouldn't have wanted to go with anything smaller, it's around 4-5m round trip but with a 12V system voltage drop can be an issue over that distance with something like the fridge. When the compressor kicks in there is a surge of power that will drop the voltage a bit, and with our model if it drops to below 10.4V it will trigger a cut out and shut it down and won't switch on again till it reaches 11.7V. If the batteries are low or there's lots of power being used at the time that could happen, and we've read numerous stories of others who have intermittently working fridges for similar reasons. As it's one of the critical appliances (we don't want it switching off and spoiling all our food 😛) the small extra cost for heavier gauge wire was definitely worth it to us, and is also recommended in the manual too 👍

    This is fantastic. One quick question (not so much on electrics, but noticed you did it here): do you treat all of the wood before putting it in the van? I noticed you applying something to the plywood for the electrics board, and the battens used to keep the batteries in place at 3:13. Would be great to know what you're using so I can do the same. Thanks so much!

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories 25 дней назад

      Cheers! And yep we treated every single bit of wood in the van apart from the bed and seat slats (because we didn't want anything leeching onto the fabric).If it wasn't on show, like the backs of the cladding, we varnished it (just basic quick dry varnish). And for the visible parts it was either paint or osmo oil depending on what it was. We used the amber tinted oil to give a nice woody colour too, that stuff is great as it's really easy to apply and a tin lasts for ages. There were a few other niche bits too like for the ply floor we used yacht varnish around the edges as we wanted something with more extreme moisture proofing, but generally that was our approach. There should be links to the exact stuff we used in the videos where we did those bits 👍

    Hi guys. Any reason why you didn’t put a fuse between the panels and charge controller?

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories 25 дней назад

      Hey, yeah it's not needed for our particular setup as it would be redundant. We have 3 panels wired in series that from the specs have a short circuit current of 10.3A. Because they're wired in series, even if one of the panels developed a fault and short circuited, there is still a max of 10.3A of current flowing through the whole array. That is below the 15A max series fuse rating of the panels of 15A, which is the amount of current the panels can safely handle. So even in the event of a fault it is well within the specs of the panel. And a fuse would likely either never blow or nuisance blow under normal use. It's more of a consideration if you have panels wired in parallel. Much more info here: gnomadhome.com/fusing-solar-panels/ or explorist.life/how-to-fuse-a-solar-panel-array-and-why-you-may-not-need-to/ 👍

    Please advise. So I bought one of these, and then I got a little nervous. I can’t seem to find anything that tells me that it’s OK to have solar going to the battery, while you’re driving down the road, and the DC to DC charger also sending juice to the battery. It seems clear that you have the exact kind of set up that I’m trying to accomplish. I believe I do not have to worry about this, I believe my mppt and the Orion, both victron, will play nice and I won’t burn down my precious van? Oh please offer thoughts. Thank you so much for the video. Following.

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories 25 дней назад

      There's no issue with that assuming of course your wires and fuses are sized correctly and the battery bank can take the maximum charge current of them both combined, and yeah it's exactly how we've been running it for the last few years. Our batteries have a recommended charge current of <50A and we have two together in parallel so we can charge the bank at up to 100A. If we had the DC/DC and MPPT both outputting max power that would generate 80A, though in practice it's a lot less than that as there are never perfect conditions, but well within the specs of the batteries regardless. The Orion doesn't 'talk' to the MPPT, but they both use a similar algorithm so as long as they're configured with the same battery settings then once the battery voltage reaches the threshold they'll both enter float. It won't be at exactly the same time but that doesn't matter. Multiple MPPTs can coordinate between themselves as they support VE Networking but this model Orion doesn't. It would be nice if it had it so they're all synchronised for maximum efficiency but it's not a problem 👍

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories 28 дней назад

      Cheers :) We have quite a few videos in the pipeline already so won't be something we'd do anytime soon. But assuming you have the same kit (Rut X11 and Mimo 3) then you should just be able to go to Services -> GPS and make sure it's enabled. Then you can set up SMS commands in Services -> Mobile Utilities -> SMS Utilities. You can choose what text you want for the command and what action to take, so we've added 'whereareyou' with an action of 'GPS coordinates'. In order to work you need to have an active sim card in the router and one that can send/receive SMS as well (not a data only sim as they usually don't include any SMS messages), then you just text the command to the number of the SIM and it should reply with the coordinates. You can get more advanced that that as well, we now have it setup with full GPS tracking and history. Good luck 👍

      We used 70mm2 for the battery connections and to the lynx, 25mm2 for the inverter, 16mm2 for solar, DC chargers and fuse hubs, 6mm2 for the fridge and heater. And 3mm2 or 1mm2 for most of the rest. Those were good sizes for us working out wiring lengths, expected current draw and voltage drop, but obviously what works for us will vary depending on your own setup and what kit you're putting in 👍

      @@user-st4hx7yn8p It's working out great for us, the only places we haven't had any Internet were a few remote spots in the Highlands where there just isn't any service. But if there is a signal to be had then usually we pick it up. Currently in Norway and it's been faultless. We considered Starlink but at the moment it's still too expensive for what we want. We'd consider it if/when it comes down in price, but only as an addition to the setup we have now as Starlink would only give us Internet, whereas with ours we're also getting GPS tracking and other stuff as well 👍

    Hi both, your channel has become a ‘go to’ for info and ideas, I have bought the same float sensors and the analog gauges, white for fresh and black for waste. However, I set up a test on a bench and can’t get the gauge to work, I can get the back light to come on, but thats it 🤷‍♂️ Does the float need to be in water, or would you know how to wire it?

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories 28 дней назад

      Hiya, nope they don't need to be in water, they're just a float that moves up and down that changes the resistance down the wire, so you should be able to set it up and test it on the bench like we did in the video. One thing that was a bit odd was the wiring colours. So on our gauge red is positive, blue is negative/ground. Then black should be wired to the sensor wire from the actual float sensor. The yellow and orange wires are optional and you can just also wire one or the other to the positive feed to have either a yellow or red backlight. HTH 👍

    Hello, first of all how you two have made it this far without divorce is amazing. Secondly I am reconsidering the whole thing based primarily on the fact that I have not even got enough money for the tools. My primary aim was to buy a van I could escape in for a while but the T5 I bought was built by an imbecile who used heavy foam and tar like glue which all came loose in the first hot afternoon. So now I have had a shell covered in noise deadening from dodomat and no insulation and an either freezing or boiling tin can. I think on reflection I need a van I can stand up in and not live quite so luxuriously as you but have a bed and insulation and perhaps one solar panel to charge my tablet. Amazing stuff and the best details and descriptions I've seen. Thank you x

    Saw this video today whilst researching Teltonika 4g modem/routers. It is nice to see the entire process of you setting this up! Can I ask why you choice the X11? There are so many models to pick from and I am confused for choice. Did you consider the X09 or the X12/14 as well as the RUT9xx ones or the RUT200? Thanks!

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories Месяц назад

      Sure, and yeah there are quite a few models! We discounted the RUT9xx series pretty early on as they're the older generation, so won't be supported as long but also lack a few features, for example they don't support 5GHz WiFi. The X12 is nice as it's the only one that has dual modems, so can load balance across two different networks at the same time. That's cool but not something that we'd likely use, and we don't pay for two high data SIM cards. To make use of it fully you'd also want an antenna that has an additional 2 LTE connections, as the X12 is 4x4. The X14 would be nice as it's a faster CAT12 modem compared to the X11 which is CAT6, but we don't really need extra speed, and again would need additional LTE antennas to take full advantage of it. The X50 is the only 5G modem, but we are almost always in rural off-grid locations where 5G isn't around so that would be pointless for us. The X09 doesn't have WiFi so not one of the ones we considered. And the RUT200 is only a CAT4 modem so a more basic, slower unit. Essentially it comes down to how much you want to pay, and what features you actually need. And the other thing is you need to pair it with an antenna that has all the connections that it needs. The X11 has dual LTE, dual WiFi and GPS, needing 5 separate antennas plug in to make full use of it. And the MIMO3-15 that we have provides all of those. To make use of some of the faster units we'd need an antenna that provided 4 LTE antennas like the MIMO3-17, which is more expensive (and would also mean squeezing two more cables through the roof!). The X11 fell right in the sweet spot for us. It does everything we want and in active use has been great for us. We could have saved money and got a more basic/slower/older one but we're quite active users (having to upload YT videos on the road etc!). Or we could have spent more and got even faster speed, but we don't need that as it's more than fast enough for us already (parked up at the moment in rural Norway and getting >50Mpbs download on an EE SIM). The problem we have on the road is not the speed of the connection but making sure we don't burn through all our data allowance too quickly 😛 HTH!
